​​​​Parks and Other Reserve Areas​​

As defined by the IUCN, national park protected areas are large natural or near natural areas set aside to protect large-scale ecological processes, along with the complement of species and ecosystems characteristic of the area, which also provide a foundation for environmentally and culturally compatible spiritual, scientific, educational, recreational and visitor opportunities.

  

Mauritius has two National Parks namely Black River Gorges National Park and Bras D’Eau National Park. The Black River Gorges National Park Project was proclaimed on the 15th of June 1994 by the President of the Republic of Mauritius. Bras d’Eau National Park was proclaimed as the second terrestrial National Park of Mauritius on the 25th October 2011 under Section 11(1) of the Wildlife and National Parks Act 1993​. 
 
Other reserves include Rivulet Terre Rouge Estuary Bird Sanctuary (RTREBS) which was the very first Ramsar Site of International Importance designated in Mauritius on the 30th of September 2001.
 
Islet National Parks have also been proclaimed on 5th June 2004 by the President of the Republic of Mauritius. There are 8 Islet National Parks in Mauritius.
